AMYC 2009 Recap PDF Print E-mail

So, another AMYC is over, and what have we got to show for it? Was it all about sunburn, strange catchphrases and 200 new friend requests on Facebook? As much fun as the events leading to those outcomes may have been, for those of you who didn't go - yes, AMYC is about something more.

The theme: Called to Lead. The speaker: Rev. Dr Brian Harris, Principal of Vose Seminary (that's right, a Bible college principal!) ...for the English side anyway. A snapshot: different examples of leadership in the Bible... from characters such as Moses, who didn't have any direction in his life for 40 years until he stumbled across a certain bush; to Jesus, the ultimate servant leader; to Paul, whose missionary influence spread far and wide, yet who often felt weak and a failure. The conclusion: no matter who or where you are in life, there is something here about Christian leadership that applies to you!

Apart from the talks, there was also one other particularly serious (but exciting) side to AMYC, and that was the election and installation of the new national MYF committee, which only happens every two years. This AMYF committee is a group of local MYF committee members who each represent their own respective MYFs around Australia. It's really important that we foster and build relationships with our sister MYFs all around Australia, because there are so many things that we can learn from each other and do to help each other. Oh, and did I mention? Our new AMYF President is Crosby Chang, from Grace Methodist Church in Perth. Frances is our EMP representative and now holds the position of Citizenship officer on the AMYF committee.

There were also a bunch of activities and games for us to enjoy and to bond with new friends... from ice-breakers, to interesting aerobics moves, to beach trips and Talent Night (i.e. group skits)... all in all, the convention was balanced with a whole lot of fun (I particularly liked the part where I got to throw flour and water on my sister >=D ).

The thing about AMYC is that although it officially ends after 4 days, the craziness doesn't end there... if you should so desire. Many of us chose to stay longer and experience the sights and sounds of Perth in true tourist manner... and once again played catch-up with friends from other states that we had just seen days ago.

So in some ways, AMYC is like one of our own youth camps, yet completely different. If you have the chance, it's something you should really take the opportunity to experience yourself while you still can (the only way you can properly get into AMYC if you regret when you're old and grey is to become a pastor...)! Luckily for most of you, next year, AMYC is being hosted by none other than our very own EMP church. While this also means a great deal of planning and running around wondering how we're going to cope with all the interstate delegates, it's pretty much the once-in-your-MYF(-and maybe JMYF)-lifetime occasion that you're going to get to have this huge event run on HOME GROUND. To sum up, here's a plug for AMYC 2010. Go to the website that has nothing on it yet (but hopefully will soon). http://www.amyc2010.cmca.ws

New 'n' Improved MYF CORNER PDF Print E-mail
Written by Michael Fong

Hey all,

If you STILL haven't noticed after all this time and all the announcements... We have a new MYF CORNER!!! WHAT IS IT?! Well, it's a place where two people will be rostered and presented every fortnight of youth and anyone can write Warm Fuzzies for them!

Warm Fuzzy noun. 1. A good impression; a feeling of comfort or trust (wiktionary.org). 2. A personal message written on a small piece of coloured paper for another person. The message typically makes the recipient feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

If you went to our winter youth camp Break Free '09 (which I'm hoping you did!), you'll remember frantically writing warm fuzzies for people. Well, the MYF CORNER is the same concept, except that you only have to write two every fortnight, rather than writing 70 in 4 days (read: 70 in the last night)!

myf_corner

On another note, I would like to ask everyone in the youth to continue talking to, getting to know, showing love for and making new-comers feel welcomed. But this isn't just limited to Saturday nights where we have youth; it's also applies to Sunday mornings! After the church service, new-comers can feel quite out of place without knowing many people and with the hustle and bustle of large groups of people (and asians) it's quite intimidating.

How we can help:

  1. Firstly, keep an eye out for new comers, especially those who are young and around our age (12 to 27ish)!

  2. Say "Hi" to them! Don't be afraid, because they're probably more scared of you than you are of them (like spiders). You can also grab a friend and say "Hi" together!

  3. Get to know them! Now I don't mean find out their deepest darkest secrets, but just find out some general points of interest about them. Such as - where they work or go to school or uni / what they do for a living / where they live / how they came to find out about our church / what kind of cars they like - and so on.

  4. Introduce them to other youth people!

  5. Invite them to youth!

Thanks to everyone for helping kick start the new MYF CORNER! Keep up the great work writing warm fuzzies. Keep making and helping new-comers feel welcomed. And most of all, keep showing each other the love God has commanded us to show for one another!

Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'  This is the first and greatest commandment. The second is like it: 'Love your neighbour as yourself.' All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments." (Matthew 22:37-40)

God is love. Whoever lives in love lives in God, and God in him. (1 John 4:16)

And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)

Peace,

-Michael

PS: If you read this far, here is your reward. Bonding-Over-Breakfast (BoB) is coming soon! MYF'ers keep your ears open and your eyes peeled!

FROG! PDF Print E-mail

Bonjour friends!

Last Sunday, we had the privilege of having Bishop Chiew at church and he spoke about resting, giving us these two verses:

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” – Matthew 11:28

“But those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” – Isaiah 40:31

As tough times come, remember to fully rely on God!

All the best!

Of Tingtongs and axe wielding murderers (+ learning about evangelism) PDF Print E-mail

Yes this is a post about Family Camp...

Though long overdue, after careful deliberation and intense recollection sitting in front of my computer with my eyes squinted like Hiro Nakamura, I have finally recalled a few bits and pieces of Family Camp.

Hooray for humankind.

This was my first "Family Camp" ever... so I was pretty excited to see how eccentric people like uncle Leo, aunty Siew, Luk, aunty Helen etc can get when not sitting in front of that pulpit every Sunday.

Anyway, it did not disappoint.  Within moments we were witness to sights of Luk wriggling a Pringle from his forehead towards the path to his mouth... resting at the nostrils before exploding into laughter much at the festive uproar of the entire camp crew.

And so the games went on, challengers come and challegers go, aunties yell and uncles blush...RL drank a Coke and ate two lemons in under 30seconds...

Thereafter Rev. Lee kicked off a series of sermons regarding evangelism and the idea of going out and spreading the Gospel.

To cap off a fruitful night I decided to say hi with some of the young adult fellowship that I haven't really got to meet since coming to EMP, after 10 minutes of banta I realised that I needed to learn the Ting family tree in order to understand EMP history... and so I was educated by a cluster of YAF.

The next day consisted of more good feeds and spontaneous games.  I got to know Sharon, the other lawyer from church and her husband and we shared about legal aspirations... yes... thats right...

Uncle Jacky's pants got egged during mini olympics... so did mine...

We took our shirts off for making the longest line of stuff and I got a grass itch for days afterwards...

Freetime consisted of MYFers mingling with JYFers and adults and pastors and families mingled amongst each other like there were no distinction... thats why its called Family Camp.

Most memorable moment?  Definitely when Colin decided to sleep talk during the middle of the night...

Colin (in bed eyes closed wolfman-beard unshaven): WHAT ARE YOU DOING!! WHAT ARE YOU DOING!!!

Mickey & I (pull pillow over head thinking maybe Colin's being attacked): meh... too lazy to get up and see what's going on

Bui : zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Matt (my brother, innocently): what are you saying?

And so crazy was Family Camp that everyone had lots of fun... and learnt lots from Rev Lee's sermons.

P.S. If you think Sunday service at church 52 weeks a year is boring... come to Sunday Service at Family Camp to spice it up!

/out.
